Fashion, like most great loves, doesn't ask permission before it starts.
It can find you anywhere: in a studio, in a market stall, in the middle of a conversation with a friend. For our founder, it found her in one of her bedroom apartments in Ikeja GRA, with a small sewing machine and a woman who believed that fashion could become more than just something she loved.
She had always been drawn to fashion; to the way a piece of clothing could transform how a woman felt, how she carried herself, and how she was seen. But the idea of building a fashion brand wasn't necessarily a grand plan from the beginning. It was something that unfolded naturally.
Isaac John, GRA - Where We Found Our Voice
Our early days were spent in Isaac John, GRA, and this is really where House of Sota started becoming House of Sota, if that makes sense.
At the time, African prints were still largely associated with special occasions. They were beautiful, colourful and deeply rooted in culture, but they weren't always being explored as everyday fashion.
We saw an opportunity to do something different. What if it could be modern, wearable and effortless?
What if you could wear it to lunch, to work, on holiday or simply because you wanted to feel good that day without waiting for a special occasion?
That thinking became part of the House of Sota DNA.
Distinct. Wearable. Different.
When The World Started Paying Attention
The House of Sota woman wasn't only in Nigeria.
As the brand grew, our pieces began reaching customers in the UK and the US. Women outside Nigeria were discovering the designs and connecting with the idea behind them: African fashion that could fit naturally into their everyday wardrobes. It was a small brand beginning to feel like something much bigger.
Sustainability in fashion isn't only about what happens to a garment after it is worn. Sometimes, sustainability begins much earlier with creating pieces that people don't quickly get tired of.
At House of Sota, we have always believed in creating designs with a distinct identity. Pieces that can sit in your wardrobe for years and still feel relevant; that is why, even after 10 years, some of our archive designs don't feel like they belong to another era.
We actually still have some of our archive collections available pieces from way back and they're on sale right now at 50% off. If you want a piece of where this all started, this is your chance.
If it's our newest designs you're after instead, those are currently 10% off as part of the 10-year celebration too.
The Outfit Everyone Still Talks About

From the early days, this one has always been a favorite. We still get asked about it. If you were around back then, you already know.
Honestly, there's so much more to this story than one post can hold, so we're not going to dump it all on you at once. This is just the beginning. We'll be back soon with the next part.
For now, come see what we've been building.
